new forest kingfishersKingfishers – one of my favourite subjects. This species is one of the most spectacular of all birds. However, they are shy and elusive – quite often all you see is a flash of blue and they’re gone. It is a protected bird under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 and a photographer disturbing a Schedule I species in, on, at or near the nest  may be committing a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to £5,000 and/or a prison sentence of up to 6 months. The welfare of kingfishers is more important than the photograph. All my gallery pics were taken from a hide on a local nature reserve with no disturbance to the birds.
